Fatty Liver Disease

Fatty liver is a prevalent issue where excess fat accumulates in the liver. Our solution, Bacillus Coagulans, has shown the potential to improve nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by enhancing gut microbiota, thereby reducing the risk of progressing to liver cirrhosis and potential liver cancer.

What is fatty liver?

Fatty liver, also called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease or metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, is a common condition worldwide. Fatty liver is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver. The accumulation of fat can interfere with liver function and lead to liver damage. Fatty liver can be caused by different reasons, including:

  1. Excessive alcohol consumption is a common cause of fatty liver. The liver metabolizes alcohol, and excessive drinking can overwhelm its processing ability.

  2. Obesity is another common cause of fatty liver. Excess weight, particularly around the waist, can increase the fat in the liver.

  3. People with type 2 diabetes are more likely to develop fatty liver because their bodies process and store sugar.

  4. High levels of triglycerides in the blood can increase the risk of fatty liver.

  5. Certain medications, such as corticosteroids and tamoxifen, can increase the risk of fatty liver.

According to the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), fatty liver affects nearly a quarter of the global population.  Also, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, nonalcoholic fatty liver affects approximately 80-100 million Americans, approximately 25-30% of the population. The exact incidence rate of fatty liver in the US is difficult to determine because many people with fatty liver have no symptoms and may not be diagnosed. However, studies have shown that the prevalence of fatty liver is increasing in the US, likely due to the rising rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes, which are major risk factors for fatty liver. In addition, fatty liver is more common in specific populations, such as Hispanic or Latino ethnicity, people over 50, and those with a history of metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance.

What happens if I don’t take care of fatty liver?

The incidence rate of fatty liver disease progresses to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer. However, studies have shown that people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are at an increased risk of developing HCC compared to those without NAFLD. It is important to note that while fatty liver disease is a risk factor for HCC, not all individuals with it will develop liver cancer. Early detection and treatment of fatty liver disease can help prevent the progression to HCC. Regular monitoring and screening for HCC are recommended for individuals with fatty liver disease at risk of developing liver cancer.

Fatty liver, also called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease or metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, is a common condition worldwide.

Why do Asians with low BMI have fatty liver disease?

Are you aware that individuals of Asian descent may have an increased risk of fatty liver disease? While this may sound concerning, it's important to remember several factors.

Insulin resistance is indeed a factor to consider. Asians, even with lower Body Mass Index (BMI), exhibit a higher risk of insulin resistance, potentially leading to fat build-up in the liver.

Genetics might also be in play. Certain genetic variations have been associated with an elevated risk of fatty liver disease in Asians, irrespective of their BMI. Therefore, genetic predisposition could be a factor.

Let's also discuss dietary habits. Asian diets often contain a high percentage of carbohydrates, particularly refined ones such as white rice and noodles. This high carbohydrate intake could contribute to the onset of fatty liver disease. It's also crucial to note the potential impact of sugary beverages and snacks rich in fructose, as these could heighten your risk of developing fatty liver.

What diet is improved for fatty liver?

A healthy diet is an important part of managing fatty liver disease. Here are some dietary recommendations that may help improve liver function and reduce liver fat accumulation:

  1. Include healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids in fish, flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts. Avoid saturated and trans fats in processed foods, fried foods, and fatty meats.

  2. Fiber can help reduce fat in the liver and improve insulin sensitivity. Choose high-fiber foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes.

  3. High intake of added sugars has been linked to an increased risk of fatty liver disease. Limit your intake of sugary drinks, sweets, and processed foods.

  4. Even small amounts of alcohol can contribute to liver damage and should be avoided or limited for people with fatty liver disease.

  5. Eating large portions can increase weight gain and the risk of fatty liver disease. Use smaller plates, and practice mindful eating to help control portions.

  6. Processed foods often contain unhealthy fats, added sugars, and salt. Instead, choose whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources.

  7. Drinking enough water can help flush toxins from the liver and improve liver function. Aim for at least 8 cups of water per day.

Can any supplements help out with fatty liver?

Probiotic:

Recent studies have shown that Bacillus Coagulans can significantly reduce fat in liver accumulation and inflammation. Bacillus coagulans is a type of probiotic that has been gaining popularity in recent years due to its numerous health benefits. Several studies have suggested that Bacillus coagulans may benefit nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by improving gut microbiota composition and function. A study on rats found that Bacillus coagulans supplementation improved gut microbiota diversity and decreased the severity of liver inflammation in rats fed a high-fat diet. Another study on humans found that consuming Bacillus coagulans containing yogurt for eight weeks improved liver enzyme levels and insulin resistance in individuals with fatty liver.

Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial in reducing a fatty liver. Studies have found that omega-3 supplements can reduce liver fat accumulation and inflammation in people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats that are important for maintaining overall health, and they can be found in fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel, as well as in fish oil supplements. They have anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce insulin resistance, contributing to the development of a fatty liver.

Summary

Fatty liver is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver, and it can be caused by several factors, such as excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Fatty liver affects nearly a quarter of the global population and around 80-100 million Americans. A healthy diet, including foods high in fiber, healthy fats, and low in added sugars, is essential for managing fatty liver disease. Probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids supplements may help reduce liver fat accumulation and inflammation.
